Transportation has a critical impact on the success of development projects. Roadways are the primary building blocks of the transportation system and can have a significant impact on public health and safety; neighborhood livability; economic vitality; environmental sustainability; and more. This lecture will discuss transportation’s role in urban growth and development and will highlight real-world examples that demonstrate transportation-land use integration.

Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) and the City of Boise will share the transportation vision for the Treasure Valley and insights on how these plans can shape an area. Rachel Haukkala, COMPASS Assistant Planner, will provide a background of the long-range transportation plan, Communities in Motion 2040 2.0, to provide a regional perspective of transportation planning in the Treasure Valley and specifically of the role and future plans for public transportation. Daren Fluke, Boise’s Deputy Director for Comprehensive Planning, will then take a more focused view by discussing the transportation and land use plans for the State Street corridor, which seeks to integrate transit-oriented developments with a Bus Rapid Transit system to revitalize a vital but struggling arterial.
